FIVE REASONS TO BOOK AN IN-HOME SESSION
My first portrait session in 2015 was an in-home newborn session and since then I have forever been in love with in-home photo sessions. The way the light filters through the windows, playing around with the architecture of your home, and being able to photograph your family. In-home photography sessions in Denver offer a unique and intimate way to capture special moments and create lasting memories. Unlike traditional studio sessions, in-home photography sessions provide a comfortable and personal setting that can result in beautiful and authentic photos.
I have been invited into so many families' homes over the last decade of being a portrait photographer. I have loved them from the beginning. Lighting is always different yet similar everywhere you go. The spacing and layout are different so it offers me a challenge to create worthy images for your walls and albums. I get to know your family through these Denver in-home photos and the result is the best and most authentic photos you’ve ever had! If this isn’t enough to convince you here are my top 5 advantages to choosing an in-home photography session!
The 5 reasons to book a Denver In-home Photo Session
Castle Rock In-home photo sessions offer comfort
My biggest advantage to in-home photography sessions is the comfort level they provide if so beneficial to children and husbands. Being in your own space can help to put your family at ease, especially children and pets. This can lead to more natural and spontaneous expressions. The photos tend to be more genuine and emotive. In-home sessions also allow me to be even more creative. I have used windowsills, couches, and beds to create my favorite and most visually appealing images. I can take full advantage of the unique architecture of your home, natural light, and personal items.
Colorado In-home photo sessions offer convenience
Okay, think of this: you just saved the struggle of putting shoes on and strapping your kids into their car seats... not to mention the 30-minute drive to a field. In-home photography sessions are convenient and a flexible alternative to outdoor and studio sessions. Oh, and I cannot forget the BIGGEST convenience of all, not having to reschedule for the weather or worry about it being too cold outside!!! We all know in Castle Rock, Denver, and Colorado Springs it will be too cold to take photos outside. Denver in-home photo sessions are perfect all year round for this perk alone. Families with young children, couples with busy schedules, and families with a winter milestone will benefit the most from the ease and convenience of having me come to their homes all year round.
Castle Rock In-home photo sessions offer intimacy
Another pro of in-home sessions is the ability to capture genuine moments in an everyday setting. Whether it's your family baking in the kitchen, kids playing in their bedrooms, or cuddling as a couple on the couch, these authentic moments can be beautifully captured in the comfort of your own home! The result is photos that truly reflect your personality and lifestyle as a family!
Denver In-home photo sessions offer familiarity
In-home sessions also provide an opportunity to document significant life events within the context of a familiar environment. From pregnancy and newborn sessions to family portraits and special celebrations, Denver in-home photography allows for more personal and meaningful photos of your family’s milestones. The home itself can become an integral part of the storytelling, adding depth and significance to the images captured during the session.
Colorado In-home photo sessions offer deeper memories
If you love your home or had a significant event (i.e. welcoming home your baby, baby's first steps, a proposal, etc.), an in-home photography session would be a great option for your family. Having a strong emotional connection to your home is the superpower of in-home photo sessions! Whether it's a favorite reading nook, a cozy fireplace, or a sunlit garden, these elements can add a unique and personal touch to the images, making them even more meaningful and memorable.
There are so many advantages to in-home photography sessions that make them a compelling (and easy) choice for those looking to for monumental Castle Rock Family photos. From the comfort and convenience they provide to the opportunity to capture genuine and meaningful moments, in-home sessions offer a personal touch for heartfelt images. If you're looking for a photography experience that is both unique and meaningful, an in-home session may be the perfect choice for you.

Family session Styling tips
Deciding what to wear for your family portraits can be challenging. These are photos you will hang on your walls, view in albums, gift to family, and cherish for years to come. It can seem overwhelming but it doesn’t need to be. However, styling your family for family portraits can be a fun and creative process that results in timeless and cherished images. When preparing for a family photo session, it's important to consider style, color, and the overall feel you want in your photos. Here are some tips to help you pick out the perfect wardrobe for you and your family.
Consider when choosing your outfits
Style: The first question you must ask yourself is: What is my family's style? Do you want to be super glammed up or classy casual? Think about the look and style you want to see in your portraits and base your outfit selections on the overall style and location of the photo session.
Color: When it comes to choosing colors for your family's outfits, opting for softer, lighter tones can have a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing effect. Soft pinks, muted blues, light greys, creams, and whites can work well for creating a timeless and classic color palette. These colors help draw attention to your family's faces and enhance the overall connection and warmth in the photos.
Feel: It's also important to consider the feel you want to convey in your family portraits. Whether you're aiming for an ethereal, whimsical, or romantic feel, your outfit choices should align with the desired result. By matching the feel of your family and the location of the photo session, you can create a visually captivating set of images that truly reflect your family's personality and style.
Flattery
Have you worn an outfit in a photo that just doesn't make you look your best? I know I have! When choosing an outfit for your photo session it's essential to select clothing that is flattering for you. Understanding your body type is crucial. Whether you have an hourglass, pear apple, or rectangular body shape, identifying the style that best compliments your figure is key. For example, floor-length A-line dresses and high-waisted pants are great for accentuating an hourglass figure, while empire waist maxi dresses can be flattering for an apple shape.
Additionally, if you have a favorite feature, such as toned arms or a slender waist, consider choosing clothes that highlight these attributes. For instance, you might opt for a sleeveless blouse to show off your arms or a belted dress to accentuate your waist.
Choose the tone
Neutral colors have been long favored for family photos because they give images a luxurious, classic, and timeless look and feel. Plus, they are very complimentary with nearly all surroundings and skin tones. Mix, match, and coordinate neutral tones to make sure each person in the family feels comfortable with what they are wearing.
Utilize your photographer's client closet (if applicable)
It's becoming popular for well-established, professional photographers to offer a client closet. A client closet is a curated collection of clothing that photographers have available for complimentary use during sessions. No more stressing about what to wear or how to dress your family. Most client closets are with mom in mind, usually dressing her first and choosing outfits for the rest of the family after. Because let's be real, Mom wants the photos more than anyone else in the family so she gets first dibs! A client closet helps to provide a less-stressed photography session. Every photographer approaches their client closet differently, so be sure to chat with them about it. But please take advantage of this resource if your photographer offers it!
When preparing for a family photo session, styling your family can be so fun! Remember these things to consider: your family's unique style, the colors that best complement your skin, and the overall feel you want to convey in your photos. Soft, light tones like pinks, blues, greys, creams, and whites create a timeless and elegant color palette that draws attention to your family's connection. Neutral colors offer a versatile and sophisticated look that complements various settings and skin tones. And please please please, take advantage of a photographer's client closet, if available, to alleviate the stress of outfit selection and ensure that everyone feels comfortable and confident. By carefully considering style, color, and feel, you can create stunning family portraits that truly reflect your family's personality and style, and that you'll cherish for years to come.

Preparing for your Family Photos: The Three P's
If you have scheduled your Castle Rock Family Photos you are probably so excited but as a mom, you know preparation and expectations are key to success. I have taken photos with children and a husband who has been less than enthusiastic about the upcoming scheduled session. Although I still achieved beautiful family photos the experience can be improved by a little preparation done on your part! Your family is the most important subject of this session. and though I can manipulate a little bit in Photoshop I cannot completely make your family 100% ready for your session like only you can. I’ve heard it said that mom sets the temperature for the family and the family unit is the thermostat. Mama, you can make a difference in how your family shows up to a photo session even when they are a little objection
My email list subscribers receive a pdf of 10 tips for preparing for your family photos but here is a spin-off of my 10 Tips. If you would like the whole list you can subscribe here!
Here are my THREE P’s for Preparing for your family portraits:
Promote the excitement
When you are excited about something, they will become excited about that same something too. Positive reinforcement is powerful! Sing your praises and excitement about your upcoming session. Show them photos of when they were younger and remind them how much they have grown and you want to remember this time in their childhood.
Once we decide on the location, HYPE IT UP! Is it a wildflower field? Talk all about the different flowers you will see and smell. The animals that might be there too! Is your session at a park in the city? Let them get excited about the things you might see there. A firetruck driving by, a fountain, the ducks in the pond!
Emphasize the importance of these photographs and the joy of being together as a family. My kids almost always cheer up when we mention these photos are for their favorite family member! Grammy always gets the biggest cheeses from my kids!
I also love a good silly photo alongside the sweet, intimate ones. So if hyping up the silliness helps them get excited do it, then do it! They will be more willing to be snuggly when the prompting arises during the session.
Pick your outfits
This is the fun part (well, for me at least). I'll send you a style guide for guidelines so don't be stressed about what to wear for your Colorado family session. The process of putting together coordinated and stylish outfits for the whole family can be a fun and creative endeavor. It's an opportunity to showcase your style and create a visual story that complements the setting of the shoot.
For me, the anticipation of picking out the perfect attire is almost as thrilling as the photo session itself. It's a chance to express our personalities while also coordinating our looks to create a cohesive and visually appealing outcome. It's like curating a mini fashion show that reflects our family's vibe and style.
Selecting outfits that make us feel confident and comfortable contributes to our mindset going into the session. When we're dressed in outfits that we love and feel good in, it boosts our confidence and adds to the positive energy we bring to the photography session.
Not only will the Style Guide I send to you help you choose, but I also have a Client Closet for full-session clients to access. It's full of dresses for moms and outfits for young children. I'm always adding to it too! I've been photographing families for 9 years and I'll be your guiding light for outfit selection. I'll be holding your hand every step of the outfit-choosing way if you choose not to access my client closet.
Plan something fun afterward
If your schedule allows, plan something fun to do as a family after a photography session! It's not just a great idea, it’s also a wonderful way to create lasting memories and continue the positive energy from the photo session. After spending time in front of the camera, it’s important to unwind and celebrate the experience as a family.
Planning a fun activity after the session also serves as a reward for everyone's participation and patience during the photo shoot. It reinforces the idea that the session was not just about taking pictures but was also a shared experience that deserves to be celebrated and followed by something enjoyable.
Now, I’m not telling you to bribe your children or husband because I believe photos should happen regardless if there are tears or not. But it is something else to look forward to after your session! Go to a park, or a sporting event, get ice cream… treat yourselves to being vulnerable with your photographer! That is no small feat! Having something to look forward to after the session can help calm children and the nerves that can happen when they don't want to do the thing. And ice cream solves a multitude of problems!
Capturing this moment in your family's history can be a positive experience regardless of tears and objections. Remember mama, you set the tone and the temperature of your family portrait session. The three key components to preparing for your family session are promoting the excitement, picking your outfits, and planning something fun after the session. If you do those three things I can guarantee you will have an amazing session celebrating your family and you will have beautiful heirloom photos to cherish for years to come.

FAQ Friday | Can we bring our dog to our portrait session?
Hi there! I’ve decided to introduce a new rhythm to my blog. I’ll be here on Fridays answering Melissa Batzer Photography’s most frequently asked questions and today’s FAQ is…
Can we bring our dog to our Colorado Springs photo session?
The short answer is YES!
I’m 1000% a dog person. Our family dog made it into many of our portrait sessions over the years and I treasure those images she is in now that she crossed the rainbow bridge. I am forever grateful to have those professional photos of our Sadie girl.
Bringing your dog to a photography session can be a run and rewarding experience. Not only will you capture beautiful memories with your furry friend, but it can also add an element of joy and personality to your photos. However, preparing and planning are important to ensure a successful session for you and your dog. Here are some tips for bringing your dog to a Colorado photography session.
Plan the location: Consider the location of the photo session carefully. Choose a place where your dog feels comfortable and safe. Is your dog easily distracted? A quieter location with fewer distractions may be best.
Purchase a photogenic leash: Most locations require your dog to be leashed and so that leash will be in all the photos. In my professional opinion, bright colors like pink, purple, red, and neon colors do not photograph well. Purchasing a brown, light brown, or sand leather dog leash and collar for your session would go well with all outfits. Here are links to a few that will be photographed beautifully. | Brown | Light Brown | Sand
Exercise your dog beforehand: A tired dog is more likely to cooperate during the session. Take your dog on a long walk or play fetch at least an hour before your photo session to help them burn off excess energy. But be sure to cut the fetch off 30 minutes before your session so we aren’t working with a panting dog’s long tongue!
Bring treats and toys: Treats and toys can be very useful for keeping your dog focused and engaged during the photo session. Use them as rewards for good behavior and to keep your dog’s attention on the camera.
Be patient: Dogs can be unpredictable, so it’s important to be patient and flexible during the session. Arrive early to allow your dog to get comfortable with the new surroundings and be prepared for all the unexpected interruptions (like potty breaks) or needed breaks.
Communicate: It’s important to let me know what your dog is like. Are there any specific behaviors, poses, commands, or cues your dog responds to? This will help me capture the best possible photos of your family with your furry friend and ensure everyone is on the same page.
Have realistic expectations: It’s important to remember that working with animals can be unpredictable. I strive to get at least one good classic family photo (everyone looking and smiling at the camera) but the rest of the session is very organically prompted for emotive images. Embrace the candid moments and the unique personality that your dog brings to the photos.
Bringing your family dog to your photography session can result in some incredibly heartwarming and memorable images. By taking time to prepare and communicating properly you can ensure a successful and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. So, don’t hesitate to include your furry friend in your next photo session and capture the special bond you share.

Lakeside Maternity Session - Colorado Springs, CO Photographer
For Brittany’s maternity session, we utilized a secluded location near a pond. The yellow marsh marigolds were in full splendor from all the rain we recently had, giving these portraits a beautiful foreground. Her children spontaneously started picking them and gave them to their mama. The waterside portraits give these images an extra element.
Brittany is a friend and fellow photographer in Illinois. She specializes in newborns and maternity. It was a delight photographing her family, they were comfortable in front of the camera. Her spirit is gentle and kind. These portraits of her feel so effortless and genuine. I loved photographing her family as they grow because was so easy to get them to connect authentically. Brittany and her family experienced the loss of a pregnancy before and getting to celebrate her carrying another little girl felt like a privilege. I’m so honored to have been able to capture this moment for her as their family grows from four to five!
It was such a dreamy evening for maternity photos! I took so many photos of them and I love them all so here is most of the session. 😂

WHEN TO BOOK YOUR MATERNITY PORTRAITS IN COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO
One of the first questions my clients ask me when scheduling maternity photos is “When should we schedule them?” My short answer is between 28-32 weeks. To make you feel like a queen in your images it takes time and proper planning for maternity sessions. And because the window is only a month you will want to book towards the end of your first trimester. Read on to learn more about when is the best time to book a maternity session.

When is the best time to take maternity photos in Colorado Springs?
Any time of year is great! Scheduling your maternity photos mainly depends on where you are in your pregnancy to achieve those beautiful, round bump photos. If this is your first pregnancy and you are at that perfect 28-33 week point during the winter you can handle the cold for a short time and have some epic snowy Mountain photos. If this is your second or subsequent pregnancy maybe a studio session would be better to keep the kids warm and happy. Totally up to your family and photographer where your session will be held in the cold winter months. At any other time of the year, the Colorado landscape is your oyster! I work with families on a case-by-case basis and am flexible to meet your specific needs.
What is the best trimester to take maternity portraits?
The best trimester to take maternity photos in is the very beginning of the third trimester, from 28-33 weeks. But there is a lot of wiggle room in this time frame as each mama is different. First-time mamas might not start showing until well into their second trimester, so you may want to hold off until the later end of the 28-33 weeks. Whereas veteran mamas may start showing earlier and have a well-defined baby bump by the beginning of their third trimester. If you are carrying multiples you should schedule it for the last couple weeks of your second trimester. Maternity photos are meant to celebrate the beauty of pregnancy so you definitely want to have a noticeable bump to show off in your portraits. But there is caution in waiting too long too!
Here are a few reasons you don’t want to go too far into your pregnancy:
You might start to feel uncomfortable.
Early labor is always a possibility
The further into your pregnancy you are the less confident you might feel - I hate to say it but this may be the case for you. We are not all blessed with only a belly bump and not an extra chin. When you look back at these photos I want you to feel like the amazing queen you are, not a cow (which can happen later in the third trimester because your baby is putting on 1/2 lb a week!!!)!
If you wait until the end of your pregnancy to have your Colorado Springs maternity photos taken that discomfort will show in your photos. We want to make sure you aren’t doing anything to induce early labor. I’m not asking your husband to swing you around or jump but some poses may be a bit tricky when your center of gravity is off. Maternity sessions require a lot of movement which can move labor along if you are close to the end.
When should I book my photographer for maternity portraits in Colorado Springs?
I will always say, the sooner the better. Are you in your first trimester right now? That’s the perfect time! If you want to wait until 12-13 weeks that’s okay. Don’t sit on it because your favorite Colorado Springs maternity photographer might be booked up already. Maternity photography is not as flexible as family photography because there is a shorter window to schedule it. So, my biggest advice is to get on my calendar early and I will reserve time for you during your winder. As we get closer to the window, we can go with how you are feeling and choose a firm date then.
I also offer a maternity + newborn bundle package as well as a Baby’s First-year Collection, which allows you to reserve the time on my calendar for subsequent portrait sessions as well! So many of my families who booked these packages tell me it was such a relief to know that their important milestone sessions were already in the books so they didn’t have to worry about it. The best advice is to book your session early!
Is 35 weeks too late for maternity portraits?
The short answer is nope! But there is a caveat. Are you having a healthy pregnancy? How are you feeling? Where is your session taking place? What’s the weather like outside? These are all factors that will play into scheduling a late third-trimester maternity session. I know for me, I was uncomfortable and swollen by 35 weeks with my second pregnancy specifically. When I was pregnant with my second over the summer I experienced severe prodromal labor with her at 36 weeks that was induced by the heat and too much activity. I definitely don’t mean to frighten you into not scheduling your session that late if you need to but just keep those factors in mind when you are looking to book your maternity session after 34 weeks.
With that said, I find that sometimes moms decide last minute they really truly desire to document this special and fleeting season of their motherhood. I will always say better late than not at all when it comes to photos. So if this is you, I would recommend not doing an adventure maternity photo session where you are hiking to a mountain top if you are past 35 weeks. Keep it simple and cool!
Is 24 weeks too early for Maternity Portraits?
It might be. Your beautiful bump may not have that perfectly roundness quite yet. Some moms are already showing enough to get their maternity photos taken this early. It is better to have a more defined bump in your maternity photos. But if you are going to take them this early for some reason there are ways to help define your belly more. You can arch your back a bit and bend your leg to pronounce your belly more, as well as big belly breaths. If you choose a Colorado Springs Maternity photographer who knows how to pose you correctly, you will still be able to get amazing photos of your baby bump at 24 weeks. If you are carrying multiples or this is a second or subsequent pregnancy you just may be able to pull off a fuller, rounder belly!
Can I book solo maternity portraits?
Of course! If you are a single mom or your husband cannot join you because of a deployment or work schedule solo maternity portraits are lovely! Or maybe you prefer to keep your maternity photo shoot just Mama and baby. Either way, in maternity portraits I (and most other photographers) will pose Mama for a few solo shots. It is such a beautiful and empowering time for a woman and I 100% support those feelings through a solo maternity portrait session.
What is the best time of day to schedule maternity portraits in Colorado? And what about the weather?
I love to shoot in full sunlight, either 90 minutes after sunrise or 90 minutes before sunset. One of my favorite things about Colorado is its four unique seasons. Each adds its unique flair for maternity sessions. I love cozy winter maternity sessions and colorful wildflower maternity sessions. As for the weather, that is one thing I cannot control. However, when scheduling your maternity sessions, I like to set a rain date just in case the original needs to be changed.
What if there are unexpected changes in the pregnancy timeline?
As a mom, I understand there is always the chance of unexpected changes in your pregnancy. Bedrest, early delivery, a loss. It’s important to communicate with your photographer as soon as possible. Most photographers understand pregnancy can be unpredictable and are more than happy to be flexible to accommodate your needs. It’s always a good idea to discuss possible contingency plans when booking your session. They can work to reschedule and always refer back to your contract.
Tips for when to book maternity portraits in Colorado Springs, CO
Booking your Colorado Springs Maternity session when you are between 28 and 33 weeks is ideal for a well-defined baby bump and confidence!
If this is your first pregnancy you may want to wait until 30 weeks for a more enhanced baby bump.
Reach out to your photographer when you are comfortable, usually around 12 weeks pregnant.
Waiting too late to schedule your photos may result in your favorite photographer being booked up.
Your photos will be beautiful no matter the season because your family is beautiful!

Usually, photographers will have their favorite locations in the area where they are very familiar with the light and can guarantee excellent results. But if you have a location that is special to your family please suggest it to your photographer! Most outdoor photographers like myself prefer scheduling their sessions during golden hour, which is the 90 minutes before sunset or after sunrise.
3. Ask all your questions
Communication is key for every relationship, right? So why would the relationship with your photographer be any different? If you have any questions or need some clarification on anything please ask. There are no silly questions. We are happy to answer them all!
4. Wardrobe planning
I recommend thinking of your family’s outfits when you first book your session. The more time to prepare for that aspect the less stressed you will be. A well-thought-out outfit pallet can make your portrait feel like the artwork it is created to be.
There are many aspects to consider when deciding what to wear for your family photos. But, keep this in mind - coordinating outfits for family portraits doesn't need to be difficult. I highly recommend not matching outfits, this can cause the photo and its subjects to look flat. I have created a Pinterest Board with some great recommendations for beautiful and artful portraits.
You can never go wrong with selecting a few main colors and textured clothing items, as well as considering the season. Focus on accomplishing a cohesive look and dressing in outfits that will allow your photos to take on a timeless feel. These tips will help you create a timeless, classic look.
But, perhaps your photographer has a Client Wardrobe you can utilize. You will discover that in your inquiry phase. If you work with me as your Colorado Springs Photographer you will have access to my ever-growing Client Wardrobe for your family portaits.
5. Planning your time well
On the day of your portrait session make sure you leave yourself extra time to get ready, and even more time if you plan on getting your hair and makeup done. Leaving buffer time and not rushing will be a key factor in having a relaxed portrait session. If you have babies or toddlers make sure they have had a nap during the day before the session. If you have older kids, try and make sure their day isn’t jam-packed with activities. You want everyone to feel their best.
6. Full bellies
No one enjoys being hangry, especially children. They will be grumpy and this one-time session will not be what you had hoped for. Usually, sessions will happen in the evening after dinner but occasionally your photographer may recommend an early morning sunrise session. If that is the case, feed them early or let them eat a high-protein snack like Perfect Bar or hardboiled egg on the way to the session, and then go out for breakfast after the session!
7.Bring snacks
I also recommend bringing non-messy snacks and plenty of water in-case they need some fortitude to finish the session strong! Here are some great non-messy snacks to bring to a photo shoot: Goldfish crackers, plain biscuits, cheese cubes, and dried fruit. Leave the lollipops, chocolate, and anything that takes a long time to eat until after your session.
8. Pack extra clothes & Supplies
Let’s face it, kids + outdoors = a mess sometimes. I feel like I’m sometimes more dirty than my kids from holding them and holding the rocks they hand me. Accidents can happen. So while you’re planning and bringing a backup outfit for your children don’t forget to bring something for you and your husband. Photos are a luxury and you are investing a lot of money and time into them. You do not want to feel disappointed when you receive your products back. If there is time with the light and your photographer allows you can even use these clothes for a second “look” if you’d like an even larger variety of images.
On top of extra clothing options for all family members, it would be beneficial to bring wipes to wipe boogers or crumbs from faces and dirt off hands. Sometimes it can be unexpectedly windy and long hair will blow in front of your face, so please also bring extra ties or clips. Bring your makeup for a touch-up halfway through the session, especially if it’s hot.
9. Relax & let your photographer run the show
Woohooo! You made it… it’s time to make the magic happen! Your photographer will lead you through your session with prompts and guidance. Don’t worry, I’ll never leave you without something to do. Your job is to have fun and enjoy each other. Don’t stress if the kids are getting grumpy or aren’t listening. The more relaxed the parents are, the more relaxed the children will be!
10. Get ready to connect as a family
This is about capturing your family’s unique dynamic. Don’t just look and smile at the camera. Snuggle and dance with each other, tickle and laugh together. Parents, it’s your job to make this portrait experience a happy memory with your children and each other. Yes, the photographer is the boss and can give you prompts to bring out your family’s happiness but only you can make this 45-60 minutes of your family’s day momentous with your joy.
You will have these photos on your wall and albums for years. You will want to look back happily on the memory of your portrait session knowing it was full of warmth and love for your family.
An excerpt from a Psychology Today article gives the perfect example of why your family photos can be a happy memory:
"O moments big as years," a phrase coined by the poet John Keats, suggests that some brief experiences are so vivid and powerful that they remain with us for all of our life. These moments tend to reflect experiences that are emotionally resonant. In them, we can find both meaning and joy, and they can serve us long after they occurred, contributing to our overall happiness and resilience. They are a gift that keeps on giving.
I hope these tips for preparing for your family portraits are helpful and will make your next family portrait session a happy memory for everyone in your family. EASY HIKES NEAR CASTLE ROCK FOR TODDLERS
When it comes to spending time outdoors with your toddler, hiking can be a great activity to enjoy together. Not only is it a fun way to get exercise and fresh air, but it can also be a wonderful opportunity to explore nature and teach your child about the world around them. However, not all hikes are created equal, and some may be too challenging or long for little ones with shorter attention spans, so there are some key components to look for when searching for easy hikes near Castle Rock with toddlers.
My oldest is 5 and my youngest is 3. I have been hiking with my kids for 5+ years now and have learned a lot of what is age-appropriate along the way, some things the easy way and some things the hard way (ie. I have had to carry both kids up a steep hill because they have had e n o u g h.)
Here are the things I have learned while looking for easy hikes near Castle Rock for toddlers:
For older toddlers, they might be able to push 2 miles without totally losing it but I recommend keeping it as close to 1-1.5 miles as possible if you don't want to carry them most of the way
A trail that is a loop is ideal for keeping the landscape fresh for your toddler
Pockets of shade are a must, especially in the hot summer months
Less than 200 ft. elevation gain is ideal. You want them to work but not too hard because than you have to work harder by carrying them up anything steep
It's hard to know which trails are easiest near Castle Rock unless you go and see them firsthand. That's why I've put together a list of some easy hikes near Castle Rock with toddlers in mind that are perfect for families with young children. And even if you do have to carry your child part of the way you won’t break your back (or much of a sweat) doing it! And if you are looking for a stroller-accessible trail near Castle Rock (which I have sometimes wanted with a newborn and a toddler) that is noted as well.
Easy hikes near castle rock, CO
Phillip S Miller Park Paved Loop - 1.1-mile
This park is HUGE! It boasts 300 acres full of activities for all ages but if you have little ones and want to get in a good walk with a stroller option, this paved trail will be perfect. Plus, there is a playground you can go to after your hike if you want more outside time there.
2. Memmen Open Space Trail - 1.6-mile
This trail’s head is a short drive from downtown Castle Rock. It has stunning views of the surrounding mountains and plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife.
3. Chuck’s Loop in Gateway Mesa Open Space - 1.6-mile
Mountain Bikes and Horses are prohibited so you won’t have to pay attention for those and your toddler however, there are portions of it that have steep cliffs and the potential for rattlesnakes are high.
These next trails are located in Castlewood Canyon State Park and require a fee.
To stay up-to-date on news for the park visit their Facebook.
4. Cherry Creek Trail Loop - 1.8-mile
Just as the name boasts there is a creek! So amazing to have a hike with a creek for the toddler’s enjoyment! My kids always LOVE throwing rocks in creeks and watching things float down them. There is meadow walking and forest so this one has the shade!
5. Lake Gulch and Inner Canyon Trail Loop - 1.8-mile
This trail has another Colorado trail with a creek to plop-drop rocks in! There are large boulders to climb so you may be just doing an out-and-back and letting your child play on the boulders and with the creek. That sounds like a great morning to me!
6. Canyon Falls Trail - 1.1-mile
As the shortest unpaved trail option on this list, this trail is PERFECT for novice hikers with toddlers and young children. The cliffs have fences for safety. There is a slight elevation gain of 130 feet with large boulders to climb on for great waterfall views! Plus there are fossils to be found.
Which easy hikes near Castle Rock are you going to try first?
Don’t they all sound great!?! I hope you find a great option for your family in this shortlist of hikes near Castle Park, CO.
Ultimately, what you are looking for when searching for an easy hike near Castle Rock with toddlers is difficulty level, length, and elevation gain. These 6 easy hikes near Castle Rock will be a great start to get you and your little ones outside together this summer. Your toddler is just begging to get out and explore the natural world around them and all these easy hikes for toddlers are right in your backyard Castle Rock! Be sure to come back to the blog and read What to Pack When You Hike with a Toddler. It'll be a great post to have in your arsenal for getting outside for a summer morning hike with your young one.

WELCOME ELIZA | COLORADO SPRINGS FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER
This Air Force life is like 3 degrees of separation… You’re just a few questions away from finding out they know someone you know! That is certainly the case with this couple. Blake was in a squadron with one of B’s dear friends from his ROTC detachment at Penn State. It’s been so enjoyable to grow our network over the 12 years B’s been on active duty. And I cannot believe we are about to make a big move to Colorado Springs for the AF! We’re so ready for all the big things God has in store for us there. Anyway, onto a little about the session…
This new family of five was a joy to photograph. Even with a 5 and a 2-year-old the session was peaceful and quiet. Baby Eliza slept much of the time but even when she was up she was calm. It’s always 50/50 if a babe will be sleeping during a session. Either way, it’s always a good time but for those sibling photos I’m sure it was nice to not have their newborn baby sister clawing at them.
Before the session starts I always ask if there are any special photos the family wants after I’m done doing my thing. When Jamie asked if we could get some images of the big kids reading books to Eliza I about melted. OF COURSE! I love reading just as much as Belle! When Blake and Jamie joined in, it was a perfect opportunity for some cozy in-home library vibes.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this in-home Colorado Springs Lifestyle Newborn Photography Session with siblings. Please check out these sessions if you loved this one…

SISTER BALLET PORTRAITS
In honor of International Dance Day, I thought it fitting to share a bit of a passion project I’ve been wanting to work on for a very long time. I don’t know if it’s my missing dancing regularly but I have been very drawn to dance photography recently. All I needed were the models!
Our neighbors down the street have two daughters who are beautiful ballerinas and I asked if they would be willing to model for me. Please allow me to introduce Ella and Grace. These sisters are passionate about ballet and were gracious enough to model for me. I could have worked with these girls all day. They were so willing to try what I suggested and gave great suggestions for poses too.
I’m so pleased with how these portraits came out especially with it being my first time photographing the movements of dance. I’m not sure what I expected but dance photography was very different from family photography. I learned even more about my camera and it stretched me (pun intended!). I’m so very excited about more ballet portraits in the future!

SPRINGTIME SENIOR PORTRAITS SESSION | COLORADO SPRINGS PHOTOGRAPHER | ELLA MAE
It was an absolute delight to have the opportunity to capture Ella's senior photos during the spring season of 2024. Spring is undoubtedly one of the most vibrant and refreshing seasons of the year, with longer daylight hours and the promise of new beginnings. As a photographer, I always look forward to spring sessions as they provide an abundance of fresh blooms and a beautiful backdrop of soft pastel colors, especially the cherry blossoms and tulips, which make the perfect dreamy setting for a photoshoot.
I had the privilege of photographing Ella and her sister during the autumn season as my ballet models, and they both did an excellent job. Ella is a timeless and classic young woman with a bright future ahead of her. She has a strong passion for nursing and plans to attend university to pursue her dreams. I have a feeling that the ER will be calling her name, and she will be able to provide the best care for her patients in any situation.
Ella, thank you for entrusting me with the responsibility of capturing your senior portraits. I am excited to witness all the incredible things that life has in store for you.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths. | Proverbs 3:5-6
With our move coming up in a few weeks, I’ll be switching over to be a Colorado photographer, specifically a Colorado springs photographer and a South Denver Photographer full-time! I’m so excited about this move as we will be living near family and old Air Force friends. Not to mention all the opportunities to schedule Colorado photography sessions in the natural beauty as a Colorado Springs family photographer. I will certainly miss the STL area and the people here. Here’s to new Colorado adventures!!

Is a Petite session right for you?
Petite sessions (or mini-sessions) are great. They are short and might fit your budget better than a full session. I totally get it, which is why I offer them. But they are not for everyone and let me dig into the why a little more for you.
What is a petite session?
A petite session is a very compressed version of a full-length session. Full-length sessions last up to an hr but a petite session is anywhere from 10-15 minutes. These petite sessions take place at a pre-determined location, with a block of times the photographer makes available.
Why consider a petite session?
So, why should you consider booking a mini session? Usually the biggest reason for booking a mini session is the cost. Since a petite session takes less time and you receive less photos, they are less expensive to book than a full session. You may utilize the shorter session because you need only a few images for some frames on your wall or capturing a great shot for your family holiday card. A petite is also great if you are trying our a photographer for the first time and would like to get a taste of their style without making a large investment. You get a slice of the cake!
15 minutes is really plenty of time for great photos of any cooperative subject. That means that a mini-session might be right for you if you are looking for couples photos, maternity photos, candid motherhood portraits, baby portraits (works best with 6-9 month old sitters not yet crawlers) or photos with school age children. Petite sessions can be a great opportunity to capture some newborn snuggles. All that being said, minis aren’t for everyone.
Why you should avoid petite sessions?
Because mini-sessions are mini, the time limitation can be an issue. More reserved children tend to take more warm up time for feeling comfortable in front of the camera and sitting still long enough for the photos. Should your child start crying at the beginning of the session there will likely not be enough time to get him smiling before the session is over.
Toddlers are often too restless to be still for sit and smile photos. However if you are more interested in candid, playful moments with your tot a petite session could work great for you!
With any subject who needs time built in to convince them to cooperate, petite sessions just aren’t long enough to guarantee the photos you desire. For newborns, active toddlers, and large family groups (more than 5 people) you’ll probably be happier with the results of a full-length session instead.
In addition, if you would like photos at a particular location or time, mini-sessions simply do not allow the flexibility.
three reasons a mini-session might be right for you
You’re hoping to save a bit of money on your photos
You’re trying out a photographer for the first time
Your family being photographed is likely to be cooperative
Does this sound like you? Great let’s book your mini-session now!
THREE REASONS A MINI-SESSION MIGHT NOT BE RIGHT FOR YOU
You have an active toddler, a shy child, or a large family that you’d like photos of
If you are wanting more opportunity to capture the specific kids of photos you want
You would like a specific time of day to schedule your photos
Mini-sessions are wonderful but they are not for every family. Carefully considering the pros and cons of a mini-session and choosing which type of session works best for you will maximize your happiness with your results.
BABY CHRISTIAN | COLORADO SPRINGS LIFESTYLE NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER
As a Colorado Springs Newborn Photographer I’m always in awe of the strength of mothers and feel an immediate connection with them since I too experienced birth and those long days with a newborn. But when you also go through something your clients have experienced you can’t help but realize your connection is even stronger. Besides our husbands being on the same crew together for a dangerous mission, Kelsey had a home birth with the same midwives who delivered Evelyn! After a less than ideal birth with her first at a hospital she knew she wanted a peaceful at home birth. And from what she told me it was every part redemptive and glorious.
What an honor it was to photograph them all in the same comfortable space they welcomed Christian into. Little man was awake for most of the session so we got to see his handsome, curious stare. It’s a secret goal of mine each newborn session to get your baby yawning… Christian understood the assignment. And to top it the weather was mild enough in late September to take some photos outside in their large backyard.

How Melissa Batzer Photography came to be
Looking back on my childhood and teenage years I have always loved documenting the moments of my life. I was the girl with the camera who was saying “Let’s take a picture!” First disposables (hello not knowing what you would get and endless doubles!) and then my first digital camera in high school. I still remember it: tiny, blue and stolen off the dashboard of my boyfriend’s truck. Still salty about that one. Anyway, I brought my camera to every event and took photos of everyone and everything during college. Wanting to always remember through the images.
I don’t know why I had this desire to remember, it might be that I seemed to realize time goes by and nothing stays the same. I do believe photos are God’s way of allowing us to see visible growth and reflect on it.
I graduated college in 2011 with a Bachelors in Nutrition & Dietetics, married in 2012 and started moving around the country with my Air Force husband. There are a lot of factors that went into me asking my husband and parents to split the Canon Rebel t3i together as a Christmas present in 2013. I did ask for it with the intention of learning and becoming a wedding photographer. Let’s get to the reasons:
In my opinion, we did not have a good wedding photography experience. Sure, I love the photos because they are from when Brenton and I committed life together with everyone we love around us. But the client experience just wasn’t pleasant. I wanted to be able to give clients an experience that was the complete opposite of mine.
Growing up my father worked out of the house in his office upstairs. He was able to attend all our field trips growing up and be there when we were sick and needed to picked up from school. That’s what I wanted (and still want), to be able to work from home and be flexible for my family.
I wanted a job option that would be easily moveable from state to state. Moving is a part of our life and I knew I wanted a career I could relocate with ease. Entrepreneurship sounded like the best of all the worlds for me.
Remember how I quickly mentioned my bachelors in Nutrition, well I LOVE food and cooking all food. I also am drawn to beautiful food photography and wanted to start a food blog sharing my created recipes with beautiful images accompanying yummy recipes.
So the self teaching began… turns out most food was a great subject to help me learn manual mode. It isn’t squirmy, doesn’t talk back, I could pick it up to move it if necessary, looks good hot or cold. I’m still a big fan of photographing food! I can’t find the beginner food photos but these below were after 3 years of practicing! Yummmmmmmy. You can view my old food blog here (which I am still holding onto for hopes of finding the time between homeschooling and running my business to resuscitate it!).
Again, I was the girl who brought her camera to every squadron event so people knew I had a “nice” camera. In May 2015 my dear friend, Tiffany, down the street had her second baby and asked if I would take her newborn photos. I jumped on the chance! I did them for free and was so excited how they turned out. And a huge shout out to my best friend, Kelcie who gave me her old 50mm/1.8 lens… my first prime lens, so good! It really changed my game graduating from that kit lens! <3 There’s sleeping baby Oliver who is now 8!
From there I thought, “I could make this my thing” and started scheming on how to grow my portfolio, market and save up for a full-frame camera. Melissa Batzer Photography’s original name was Kindred Hearts Photography. After a year with that name it never really sat well, I felt like it limited me somehow and then I switched to Melissa Batzer Photography. I asked friends to be models, shot mini sessions for $25 and second shot for wedding photographers in Spokane. I worked on my editing and discovered the style that made my heart the most joy-filled. I shot my first wedding in 2017 where my sweet husband was my second photographer. He was a great logistics guy and my calming person, not so gifted with the camera though, sweet man.
Once we moved to New Jersey and had our first I decided pursing weddings at the time wasn’t for me with young children. Maybe I’ll pursue them again in the future, only the Lord knows. But I have learned my true love is families. Chasing toddlers, capturing tender snuggles that you will never grow tired of, holding hands that will soon outgrow your own. It’s all so beautiful and children grow way too fast to not keep photographing them for you!
I have photographed more families than I can recall over these past 8 years! Wow, 8 years in business… Just typing that made my heart flood with gratitude. It’s been stretching and humbling to embark on a business as a military spouse. Relocating every couple of years definitely has its difficulties as a service based business. But the Lord has been kind to me and always providing new and incredible families to work with with each move. Whether they started off as friends who have given me the opportunity to photograph or cold clients who I know can call my friends each and every client is now a friend and either a Melissa Batzer Photography family or bride & groom! How blessed am I to be gifted with the opportunity to meet so many incredible families and honored they trust me to provide heirloom images for their family and the generations to come. I can’t wait to see where God takes this little business of mine over the next 8 years.

THE LEE FAMILY | COLORADO SPRINGS FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER
Fall is quickly approaching and I’m excited for one as a Colorado Springs Family Photographer. Fall has to be my favorite season to photograph in. The spring and summer greenery is great BUT sometimes I find it to be distracting and they cast a green tint onto skin. So once the plants go into winter mode I’m the most excited about taking photos! This amazing session took place on a perfectly temperate October evening. I had found the perfect spot in a nature preserve with open shade and dried grasses for a delicious golden look.
A family who loves Jesus, has fun with each other, and loves their children so tenderly truly makes my job so easy! And the Lee family definitely made my job so easy with their big smiles and easy going, fun loving approach to the session. Shoulder rides, hugs and a whole lot of giggles were front and center.

Colorado Springs Family Photographer | Holly & Tatum
I am currently a Colorado Springs Family Photographer but this session was located in Central New Jersey.
The relationship between a mother and a daughter is something so special. There are so many well known quotes which depict that.
“A daughter is someone you laugh with, dream with, and love with all your heart.”
“A daughter is just a little girl who grows up to be your best friend.”
“A mother is the only person in the world, who can turn daughter’s worries and fears into happiness.”
“A daughter is the happy memories of the past, the joyful moments of the present, and the hope and promise of the future.”
Just to share a few 😅
This motherhood session had all the beautiful and true emotions captured. Holly and Tatum played hide and seek, snuggled and sang! I’ll give you one guess which song this two year old little lady sang… If you guessed “Let it go!” you were correct! It was on repeat on my phone to butter her up to the camera.
Thank you Holly and Tatum for the honor of capturing your sweet relationship. I pray you grow up close and bond is fulfilling to you both.

Colorado Springs Family Photography | Hansen Family
Documenting growing families is such an honor but to capture these moments for friends is even more special. This sweet family lived in our neighborhood here in Illinois and so we were blessed with getting to know them.
Let me tell you something about this mama… Her husband had a very busy job, leaving her solo-parenting much of the week. She handled her daily rhythms with grace and a calmness. When I would see her at the neighborhood playground she always greeted everyone warmly. The love she has for her two girls and the little love arriving in October truly radiates from her. I’m certain you’ll be able to feel that from this family session.
Thank-you Hansen family for the honor of capturing your beautiful family as your Colorado Springs Family Photographer.

Johnson Family | Highlands Ranch Photographer
Well, this is slightly embarrassing but very telling of how this website has been neglected. I photographed this sweet family over two years ago. It was one of my first’s after Evelyn’s birth. Sarah and Stephen met in Atlanta before moving to Princeton for a new job opportunity. Their sweet first born Livy was a a treat to photograph. They have since welcomed another baby girl into their family. Sarah is a gifted singer-songwriter and we love her songs in our house! Go check her out at www.singalongwithsarah.com.
I really loved this location in Princeton when we were stationed there. I shot more than 10 family sessions there in 2 seasons! What a gift to be able to photograph at such a historical location full of so much beauty and different backgrounds. I hope you enjoy this sweet family session!

Welcome Baby Niki
Though I have relocated as a STL Newborn Photographer I have so many beautiful families to share from our time in New Jersey. And this session is definitely in my top 3 of 2021 and I have A LOT to share still.
Jordan and Margarita welcomed baby Niki and it was a pleasure to photograph them. I met Margarita, a powerhouse lawyer, through our squadron spouse group. But because of the Covid pandemic and social distancing we only got to gather a few times at socials and squadron functions so when she contacted me to photograph their family growing I was elated. You will see that Margarita’s parents, sister and grandmother were visiting during her session and I will always take photos with grandparents and family members. One is especially special with four generations present.
There really is nothing better for a photographer than photographing friends! I truly believe it is a honor to be trusted to photograph people you know.
Especially as you are so vulnerable in sleep deprivation and healing in those first few weeks of motherhood.
Your house is a mess. There are bottles or nursing gear everywhere.
You are slower and healing through the pain.
What an honor to be invited into your space. My heart explodes because of the trust you put in me.
With that said, THANK YOU Margarita, Jordan and Niki for allowing me to capture your love for each other.
